Fishing Report - 05/13/05
Greetings from the Tropics,
Kit McNear, the saltwater tournament director for Western Outdoor News and Danny Jackson, videographer for Fox Sports, fished with us this week. They were joined by California anglers "Jigging" Jack Lester, Tim Snyder, Gary Heppy, Todd Pyle, Gerry Puglisi and Jim Heflin.
The bite started off 'hot' for Kit, Gerry and Jim. While fishing near Isla Ladrones, Kit reported being able to catch all the wahoo you wanted, both on the troll and on jigs. Not wanting to kill a lot of wahoo, they brought to the boat 6 nice fish in the 35 to 50 lb range. Jim also jigged up a 40 lb broomtail grouper that we all enjoyed for dinner the first night. The other two boats also caught hooes this day but didn't catch the hot bite that Kit's boat enjoyed.
Other notable catches this week; Todd and Gary, fishing with Captain Lucho, caught a 230 lb and a 200 lb yellow fin tuna at Isla Montuosa. Good going guys! Gerry caught an estimated 600 lb black marlin and Jim caught an estimated 500 lb black marlin, both fish were caught and released while fishing with Captain Macho at Hannibal Bank. Kit caught his, all time best, yellow fin tuna this week with the fish weighing at 264 lbs. He was also able to catch his biggest ever cubera snapper that weighed in at 50 lbs. The wahoo bite continued strong all week as the fish were readily attacking trolled lures, jigs and poppers. Our anglers reported a good snook bite at the 'snook hole' on Coiba Island and yes the crocodiles were fishing there to.
Anglers 'Jigging" Jack and Tim were into the cubera snapper this week while fishing with Captain Serigo. They also were able to hook-up wahoo, spotted grouper, yellow snapper, blue jack, amber jack and several other species on the iron. These west coast anglers are expert jig fishermen.
Thanks to all of our anglers and crew for another exciting week of fishing here at Pesca Panama!
Tight Lines,
Captain Jay Gustin
P.S. Tackle Notes
Kit McNear brought two of the new, prototype, spinning reels from Accurate to test on the reel breaking, drag burning fish we have here in panama . The reels held up to the task and we are looking forward to working with Accurate and their new spinning reels. Kit also had a new popping rod designs from Loomis with him. It seems a lot of the tackle manufactures are bringing out new products for the 'boom' in popper fishing.
