Fishing Report - 04/07/05

Hello from the tropics,
Five million casts, five broken rods, three languages being spoken, and a dozen or so lost lures. Just another week in Coiba!

I think that one of the most exciting things about sport fishing is; fishing for that one fish‚ the one fish that despite the best tackle, line, knots, lures and hooks is just un-stoppable!!! We had a great group of anglers from France last week. Joel Cojean, Eric Fragniere, Ludovic Fragniere, Alain Sctiori, Guy Poulain, Christian Lhote and Jean-Pierre Lecomte arrived at Coiba ready to do what this area is known for‚ casting top-water lures!! Fishing with Zeneq and Smith rods, Shimano and Diawa reels, the best braided lines and lures, this crew went to work on the inshore and offshore fish here at Coiba, but the fish had their turn. The guys landed dozens of inshore and offshore fish,  but even with the right gear‚ several monster Cuberas were able to find their way back to the rocks and we were left with nothing but a frayed line and a fish story!!  Welcome to Coiba guys!

Although a few did get away, this group had the chance to see Coiba inshore fishing at its best with many explosive top-water strikes a day!! Captain Lucho made an excited radio call early the third day alerting us that he had lost count of the monster Cubera strikes and that he had already landed 2 fish over 50lbs! Team Macho had similar fishing landing many Cuberas, 2 which were over 50lbs and one over the 60lbs mark!!  Although the offshore top-water bite was somewhat off, the tuna aggressively attacked live baits and the guys landed several fish between 150lbs and 240lbs. On the forth day Jean-Pierre and Christian decided to throw a live bait on their heavy spinning rod just to see how it handled a XL Tuna. One hour and 20 minutes later and lots of pain and sweat, the guys had a 165 lb Yellow fin alongside!! The entire crew also had some luck on the smaller scrappy Yellow-Fin on top-water landing several to the 60lbs mark. It was a great week guys. We will talk about the ones we landed and the one or two that got away for a long time to come!!

Good fishing
