Fishing Report - 2/9/05

Hello from the tropics,

The Barge was loaded with enthusiastic fisherman and the bite continues to be very good. Master fly fisherman and Coiba regular Mike Augat was back with another group of serous anglers from the winter bound north east US.  Jeff Hefke, Bob Barnes, Michael Pell, Ted Merletti, Tom Rousseau, and Alan Smith all joined Mike in hopes of finding fishing action here at Coiba. Also joining us this week was returning guests from northwest Arkansas Greg Kresse, Tim Dennis, Bill Martin, Dave Albert and Coiba first timer Monty Heathman.

The week started out with a bang when Michael Pell, fishing with captain Sergio caught and released an estimated 400 pound black Marlin! The offshore fishing continued to be good with plenty of Sail Fish a few Dorado and several very large Yellow Fin Tuna.  Mike Augut and the crew fishing with Captain Lucho had the battle of a life time with a huge 306 pound Yellow Fin.  Everyone in the boat had their chance to battle this new Pesca Panama record Tuna, taking over two hours to bring him within the reach of the gaff. The crew aboard Sergio's Boat had their hands full the third day with another XL Tuna weighing in at 293 pounds‚ nice fish!!  Fishing with Team Macho; Dave, Bill and Monty also had their hands full landing more than their share of Sails, a 160 pound Tuna and a 205 pound Tuna. Fishing aboard Team Ponchera Greg and Tim Sharpened their fly fishing skills and added several new species to their list of fly caught fish! The guys had some fantastic strikes landing a nice size Dorado, a 14 pound Snook, a small Cubera and an uncountable number of Jacks and Trevally.  We also found the sails very agreeable to giving us shots on the Fly and Tim managed to land his first two Sails on the Fly!

The inshore fishing once again required time and patience, but we saw some great catches and good numbers. Greg and Mike both had Roosters over 40 pounds! Team Macho worked their magic with the bottom fish and landed a huge 65 pound Cubera and a 35 pound Grouper. Mike and his crew also saw great action on the fly landing dozens of blue Trevally and several Jack Crevelle.

It was another great week at Coiba. We look forward to seeing you next time.

Good fishing,
Captain Travis
